Jim Malone, born 1946 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, took a three year teacher training course in North Wales and then studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts whence he emerged with a first class honours degree. Towards the end of his course he spent a summer at Winchcombe Pottery studying under Ray Finch.

On leaving Camberwell he opened his first studio at Llandegla near Wrexham in North Wales where he stayed for six years. He was artist in residence at Cardiff College of Art in 1980.

Jim moved to Cumbria in 1982 to teach at the Cumbria College of Art in Carlisle, and in 1984 he set up a new studio at his current premises in Ainstable, Cumbria. During the 1980s he spent much time on lecturing visits to many colleges and universities.

Jim is a potter of considerable importance. His influences are oriental - Chinese and Korean. He works mainly in stoneware with incised or brushed decoration. His work is to be seen in many public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Paisley Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow. He exhibits regularly at solo and group exhibitions and Manchester Metropolitan University have published a slide set with commentary and a video -'Jim Malone Artist-Potter'.
