Isle of Wight Pottery

Isle of Wight Handcraft Pottery was an offshoot of the Carisbrooke Brick, Tile and Pottery Works in Gunville, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight. It was founded in 1926 by Samuel Saunders, also well known as the Saunders of Saunders-Roe Aviation.

Red local clay was used, decorated with coloured leadless glazes. The designs were always simple and usually abstract. A coloured glaze at the rim that would run down the sides of the pots gave a wavy effect that was often used.

Hulbert, Samuel's son, took over after his father's death in 1933, but in 1938 when the pottery manager was caught stealing from the company, he decided to close down.
